Some molds deserve to live for centuries. This German beer stein was produced from an original 1894 mold, and the degree of detail in its stoneware, raised-relief decoration is truly exceptional. Selective hand painting brings out the three main subject areas, while careful application of background washes, border bands, and glazing gives the relief its depth and finish. A relief conical pewter lid crowns the piece. Holding 0.50 liters, this is a stein rooted firmly in nineteenth-century craftsmanship, made using the very forms the old masters cut. For traditional collectors who value authentic old molds and hand finishing, this beer stein offers remarkable quality and history in one piece.
